Dewberry received top honors at the Association of Licensed Architects (ALA) 17th Annual Design Awards, recognizing the firm’s design achievement for Dallas Fire Station 37. Station 37 won two awards including a silver medal in the institutional category and the evening’s highest honor, the Don Erickson Presidential Award. Dewberry’s Thomas Shaw, AIA, accepted the awards on the firm’s behalf.
Dewberry’s winning entry, a 12,000-square-foot replacement facility, serves one of the most densely populated square miles in Dallas. The project features simple and clean angles accented with bright, colorful, and metallic elements. Station 37 opened in 2013 and includes two full 70-foot and two half 40-foot apparatus bays with living quarters to accommodate 15 firefighters per shift. The facility is designed to meet LEED Silver® standards from the U.S. Green Building Council. This is one of many public safety facilities designed for the City of Dallas by Dewberry, including the Dallas Police Headquarters.
The Presidential Award is named for the founder and first ALA president, Don Erickson (1929 – 2006). Erickson formed the association in 1998 and was a student and protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright.
ALA is a national organization of architects and related professionals with a membership of nearly 1,500. Its mission is to advance the architectural profession by supporting and improving its role in the built environment through contributions to the general health, safety, and welfare of the general public.
Station 37 was also honored with a Merit in Architecture Award by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Northeast Illinois Chapter on October 28, 2015.
