Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, announced that it has been selected by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to provide engineering design services for the I-64 Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Segment 4C design-build project in Hampton as part of the Shirley-Branch/Dewberry joint venture design-build team.
The project is part of the ongoing VDOT initiative to
construct 46 miles of express lanes from I-64 in Newport News to the
I-64/I-264/I-664 interchange in Chesapeake.
The Shirley-Branch/Dewberry team will complete roadway,
structural, noise barrier, drainage, and traffic enhancements to improve I-64 from
east of LaSalle Avenue to west of South Mallory Street, including widening the
westbound I-64 bridge over the Hampton River and Hampton Branch and removing
and replacing the eastbound I-64 bridges over the Hampton River and Hampton Branch.
“We are excited to continue being involved in the
widening and upgrading of I-64 within the Hampton Roads area to improve operations
on this critical corridor,” says Dewberry Vice President Steve Kuntz, PE, DBIA.
“Maintaining traffic mobility during construction and improving safety, while
also minimizing impacts to the adjacent communities and properties are
paramount for our team and for the success of the project.”
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2023 and is
planned to be completed by the end of 2026.
