Wake Technical Community College’s Health Sciences Building H Wins Sir Walter Raleigh Award

Dewberry’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology engineering services recognized in City of Raleigh design competition.

The new facility has been awarded the 2017 Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Public Facilities and Spaces.

Wake Technical Community College’s Health Sciences Building H has been recognized with the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance in the Public Facilities and Spaces category, which recognizes outstanding new contributions to the character, environment, and appearance of the City of Raleigh. As a subconsultant to LS3P Associates, Inc., Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, performed mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology engineering services.

Health Sciences Building H is a 65,000-square-foot, three-story building housing 16 classrooms, seven laboratories, two video conference rooms, faculty offices, faculty training rooms, and a campus data center. The mechanical design included a stand-alone, centrifugal chiller with variable frequency drives, induced draft cooling tower, and a primary secondary chilled water pumping system. Each floor contains variable air volume central station air handling units, and the building management system is integrated to the open protocol campus-wide facility management system. Technology engineering services included design for the audiovisual access control and video surveillance systems.

“Providing an array of services for this facility was a wonderful opportunity for our team,” said Dewberry Senior Associate and Project Manager Gregory Mills, PE, CEM, LEED AP BD+C. “We’re honored to have been recognized among many other great firms in the Sir Walter Raleigh Awards.”

The U.S. Green Building Council recently accredited the project with a LEED® Silver certification.
