The American Public Works Association (APWA) Mid-Atlantic Chapter has announced that Brian Batten, Ph.D., CFM, has been named its Consultant of the Year. He is recognized for his work on the Sea Level Wise project, which supports the City of Virginia Beach in its resilience efforts.

Batten is a senior associate and senior coastal scientist with Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, in its Richmond, Virginia, office. With nearly 25 years of experience, he has helped communities along the east coast with integrated coastal resilience expertise, including sea level rise and climate change.

Virginia Beach was recently named the Resilient Virginia Community of the Year by the Virginia American Planning Association for its Sea Level Wise project, for which Batten provided project management and technical direction.

“I have been a Virginia resident for many years, and I know first-hand the impacts that sea level rise can have on a community,” says Batten. “That’s why I am thankful for the opportunity to help the city improve its resilience through infrastructure improvements, research, education, and awareness.”

Batten holds a doctorate in coastal oceanography (2003) and a master’s degree in marine environmental science (1999) from Stony Brook University, and received his bachelor’s degree in marine science from Coastal Carolina University (1997). He is a member of the Association of State Floodplain Managers.
