Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, has announced that Caroline Cunningham, AICP, PMP, CFM, ABCP, has been promoted to market segment leader for the firm’s risk, response, recovery, and resilience (R4) practice. R4 builds from the previous risk, response, and recovery market segment to represent the integrated expertise from the resilience solutions, disaster recovery, and technology services groups. The expansion underscores more than 10 years of climate adaptation and resilience project experience within the firm. Based in the Raleigh, North Carolina, office, Cunningham will lead strategic growth and development of new services and will continue to advance resilience solutions across commercial, federal, and state/local markets.

Cunningham has nearly 20 years of experience in hazard mitigation, climate adaptation, and risk assessment and previously served as business strategy leader for the firm’s resilience solutions group. As business strategy leader, she was integral to the firm’s resilience growth initiative and evolution of the R4 group, while serving clients in a variety of markets, such as energy, environmental, federal, transportation, and water. In her new role, Cunningham will lead efforts to grow state and local climate adaptation and disaster support, as well as broadening service offerings for resilience planning and design.

“Caroline’s commitment to creating adaptable and prepared communities has been instrumental to the growth of our resilience services in the last two years,” says Senior Vice President Jerry Sparks, PE. “Her delivery on both large-scale federal projects and local community initiatives makes her a key asset for helping communities throughout the country plan for, recover from, and thrive before and after disasters.”

Cunningham earned her master’s in city and regional planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s in natural resource management and economic policy from Clemson University. She serves as vice president and board member for the National Hazard Mitigation Association and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, Association of State Floodplain Managers, Disaster Recovery Institute International, North Carolina Association of Floodplain Managers, Project Management Institute, and the Virginia Floodplain Management Association.
