The Environmental Industry Summit XXIV recently held their annual Environmental Business Journal and Climate Change Business Journal (CCBJ) Business Achievement Awards ceremony, recognizing companies for their contributions to the environmental and climate change industries. Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, received the Project Merit: Low-Carbon Energy award for the Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) solar facility. This category recognizes projects for innovation, unique solutions, or partnerships in renewable energy or low-carbon power or energy.

PNCT’s solar facility aligns with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s (PANYNJ) Net Zero Roadmap, a comprehensive plan to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To support this goal, PNCT partnered with Standard Solar Inc. on a 25-year power purchase agreement for a 7.2-megawatt solar installation project. Dewberry served as engineer-of-record for the project and provided site/civil engineering, hazardous waste/materials assessments and remediation, permitting and regulatory compliance, sustainability services, and periodic construction inspection. The solar facility generates up to 50% of PNCT’s annual electrical demand, reducing emissions and improving air quality for the East Coast’s busiest and largest port. The project is estimated to save 8,107 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

“It’s an honor to support Port Newark Container Terminal and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in their ambitious climate and sustainability goals,” says Dewberry Associate Vice President Donald Flood, PE, SWAC. “This new solar facility relieves demand on the Newark-area electrical grid and allocates any excess energy into the local grid, benefitting the surrounding communities.”
