Continuous Flow Intersection

Florida’s First Continuous Flow Intersection

A continuous flow intersection works by ushering left-hand turning traffic into a special left turn bar several hundred feet in advance of the main intersection.

The CFI design patent had just been lifted at the time of our design, and not many other examples exist. To date, we have formulated solutions for unique signal layouts and the accommodation of semi-trucks, bicycles, and pedestrians.

The intersection of State Road 82 and Daniels Parkway/Gunnery Road, located near the city of Fort Myers, Florida, is an integral piece of the Florida Department of Transportation’s six-lane capacity improvement project in Lee County. During heavy traffic hours, the popular commuter intersection sees an average of over 1,350 cars/hour going against even heavier peak-hour left turn volumes of 1,410 cars/hour. The typical solution, a grade-separated single-point urban interchange, could have helped alleviate traffic, but at a substantial cost to the client. Instead, we designed a continuous flow intersection (CFI) to meet the specific needs of the intersection — a design that offers comparable levels of service flow, but with greater cost-savings.
