Hawaii Coastal Flood Study

Hawaii's Hurricanes

Our hazard analysis considered the combination of storm surge and hurricane-induced wave hazards.

The ADvanced CIRCulation (ADCIRC) model for coastal ocean hydrodynamics was selected to develop still water and storm surge elevations for the study area.

As part of the RMTC/URS joint venture, we evaluated and mapped the magnitude and extent of coastal hazards due to hurricanes for six Hawaiian islands. Although the effective Flood Insurance Rate Maps had accounted for tsunami hazards, the hurricane flood hazard had not been previously evaluated separately in a comprehensive study throughout the islands. We conducted storm surge modeling, stillwater frequency analysis, overland wave modeling, and hazard zone mapping tasks.
